School Meals, Packed Lunches & Healthy Eating

Each day, pupils can choose between having a school meal or bringing a packed lunch from home. We provide healthy menu options, including hot and cold vegetarian dishes. Children can also select a jacket potato with various fillings or a sandwich. A healthy salad bar is available to complement the meal, along with a home-cooked dessert or a fresh fruit option.

Children in Years 3 to 6 can bring a break-time snack to school. To promote healthy eating, these snacks should be fruit, vegetables, a small sandwich or a healthy break bar.

Hermitage is a "Nut Free" school due to the presence of children and adults with allergies. Therefore, no nuts or nut products (such as Nutella or peanut butter) are allowed.

Please see below for our current menu, which is also attached for printing at home.

Packed Lunches: Tips for a Healthier Choice

Why Eat Well?
Healthy eating gives children the energy and nutrients they need to grow, develop, and stay active. A nutritious lunch fuels them for learning and play.

What Makes a Healthy Packed Lunch?

  • Drinks:
Water is ideal and freely available at school. You can also pack 100% fruit juice, a smoothie, or a milk-based drink.
    ✗ No fizzy drinks.

  • Snacks:
Occasionally include healthier options such as:
    ✓ Crisps (sparingly)
✓ Biscuit bars with minimal chocolate
    ✓ Plain biscuits

    Avoid These Items:
    ✗ Cakes and pastries
✗ Jam, Nutella, or chocolate-spread sandwiches
    ✗ Sweets or chocolate
✗ Nuts or nut products (due to allergies)

Practical Tips for Packing Lunches

  • Offer variety to ensure balanced nutrients.

  • Involve your child in lunch preparation—they'll enjoy it more!

  • Use wholemeal bread or a mix of white and wholemeal.

  • Add salad to sandwiches (keep it separate to avoid sogginess).

  • Repurpose leftovers like rice, potato or pasta into salads.

  • Wash the lunchbox daily.
